Methodist Health System Nursing Disability Scholarship,USA


Disability Scholarships are available for all levels of nursing education. Applicants should note that awards are made annually by the scholarship committee based on the availability of funds and that this funding will impact the applicant’s tuition reimbursement from MHS. Disability Scholarships Applicants are required to disclose all funding sources and funds may only be applied to tuition, fees and books.

Payment will be made directly to the Disability Scholarships recipient. Although the period covered is for both the Fall and Spring semesters, payments will be made for each semester separately. The Disability Scholarships applicant must report grades at the end of each semester.

Clinical Psychologist Disability Scholarships

We would like to invite applications for the post of Clinical Psychologist. This position will be fixed term until December 2012 and is a full-time post.

The successful candidate will work in the OASIS Prison In-reach team, a new service for prisoners at high risk of developing psychosis. The aim of the project is to roll-out an early detection and early intervention service in Her Majesty's Prison Brixton.

The new clinical team will work closely with the OASIS community team, with the in-reach psychiatric mental health and within the existing time structure of the prison. Her Majesty's Prison Brixton is a category B local prison for male prisoners aged 21 or over who are on remand (going to trial) or sentenced to less than two years. The prison has an average daily population of 798 and receives on average 20 new receptions each day, about 50% are resident in SLaM.

Prisoners resident in SLaM aged 21-35 will be screened during their first week induction to prison using the screening instrument developed in our previous study.

Prisoners who meet criteria for the at risk mental state will be provided with a well-established intervention package which is routinely used in the OASIS service in the community. Treatment will start in prison and the same clinician will continue seeing the prisoner when they are released into the community. Clients will be followed up for a period of 2 years after the initial assessment.

The successful candidate will also be encouraged to develop their own research interests.

Starting salary £40,313 pa (inclusive of £2,323 pa London Allowance).

PhD Studentships in Wireless Networks and Network Security

This project will investigate how networked sensing systems can intelligently monitor communications activity to make informed judgements about potential CYBER-threats, network intrusions, subversions and other hostile activity that comprise either the network communications (e.g. denial of service) or information content (e.g. phishing). For this project this bio-inspiration thread also has particular relevance for developing monitoring approaches that exploit new CYBER concepts such as digital DNA. To start with this project will be based on current internet technology but will then progress to cover developments for next generation internet concepts and protocols.

The PhD programme in the UCL Security Science Doctoral Training Centre (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/secret) is a 4 year programme where the first year involves taught courses and research skills training. It is expected that the student will spend a total of around 6-8 months working on site with the industrial sponsor during the course of the programme.

Telemetry of Critical National Infrastructure using wireless monitor networks
This project proposes to develop a robust and secure telemetry network of intelligent, automated Critical National Infrastructure monitors to enable emergency services and local government to quickly ascertain the impact of any event on their critical infrastructure so that timely interventions may be made either to repair/limit damage or to prevent loss of life. The main research challenges lay in the development of a wireless telemetry sensor network architecture and associated communication protocols that offer 1) easy device deployment (automatic configuration), 2) high-reliability of information, 3) long-life time and 4) provide rich data sets. The focus of the project will be on the communications network and the network architecture which will provide data security over air interface, resilience against overcapacity and not be susceptible to interference.

Ph.D. Student in Microbiology / Infectious Diseases, University Hospital Center in Lausanne (CHUV) disability scholarships

A position is open at the University Hospital Center in Lausanne (CHUV) for a

Ph.D. Student in Microbiology / Infectious Diseases

Starting immediately (or upon agreement) for a duration of 3 years.

The project is entitled Rapid, high throughput real-time single-cell determination of antimicrobial resistance using a miniaturized “lab-on-a-chip” device, funded by a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).

This interdisciplinary project involves clinical and diagnostic physicians at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) and physicists at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). It aims at developing innovative methods for the rapid detection of pathogens and the identification of the most effective antimicrobial treatment by assessing bacterial resistance to antibiotics. These elements are essential for adequate treatment of infections and decreasing overall morbidity and mortality.

Novel microbiological methods will be developed and evaluated. The project will combine general and molecular microbiology techniques (bacterial cultures, phenotypic experiments, antibiotic susceptibility testing, etc.), detection of microbial activity by microcalorimetry (measurement of heat production) and assessment of bacterial physico-structural properties by atomic force microscopy. Microbiology and microcalorimetry techniques will be carried out at the CHUV, whereas atomic force microscopy will be performed in close collaboration with the EPFL team.

The research topic is both interdisciplinary and translational. Our findings may improve the diagnosis of infectious diseases by speeding up pathogen detection and their antibiotic susceptibility profiles, and ultimately lead to the development of a new diagnostic device.

We offer a pleasant and stimulating working environment in a young and motivated team, interdisciplinary collaboration with recognized institutions (CHUV, UNIL, EPFL) and opportunity for publication in high-ranking scientific journals. Ph.D. applicants must hold a master degree in natural sciences (biology, microbiology, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy or related disciplines). Practical experience in microbiology is preferred.

High motivation, ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and social competence are expected. Salary is based according to the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) guidelines. Due to limited funds for candidate interviews, only applicants from European countries will be considered. The working language is English and French.
